17 April 2020 – Why Continuous Testing Matters

In this review, we take a deep dive into explaining the importance of testing for SARS-CoV-2 in patients. Researchers have analysed the current practices used for isolating the RNA genome of the virus and detecting the virus, by a process called reverse transcription- real-time- PCR RT-qPCR). To detect the virus with RT-qPCR  two specific target genes can be looked into, the nucleocapsid gene and the orf1ab gene. The research team suggests that the current diagnostic tests may be more sensitive when detecting for the nucleocapsid gene. They also discuss a case study of a patient in China who tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 when presenting symptoms. They go on to talk about the importance of testing new diagnostics for its accuracy. To read more about what they found in their analysis, give the post a read.
